the road less tivo’d: favorite commercial 2009

i suspect that tivo would not decrease my television watching time but increase it. so alas, i still watch commercials but find fewer folks to discuss them with. i often get blank looks when i ask…have you seen…..?

i realized that if i posted commercials, my audience may actually be watching them for the first time…but then we can talk about them!

a biz markie soundtrack. a new york vibe. good friends singing off key in an atmosphere of familiarity. moody lighting. a very efc pm, cbc pm, club vision feel to it. it made me smile every time. when else does a commercial do that for me?

gay rights in a different world: the right to life

the west is a different world as seen in this story from uganda. while in the states, the homosexual community is fighting for the right to marry, the battle for rights is much different elsewhere…gays are fighting for the right to live!

in the west there is discrimination and minority groups are shortchanged and even abused but when something like this surfaces, we see how very different life is in the west.

i’m surprised there is so little coverage about this when gay marriage rights are usually the lead story on any given night when there is movement.

i wonder if the same crusaders for rights here have the same compassion to fight for rights for others when the stakes are deadly. they haven’t said much from the safety of their own turf yet.

‘Death for gays’ debate in Uganda

Dec 9, 2009 12:14 AM | By Sapa-AP

Proposed legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals.

Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/Aids. They believe the bill is part of a continent-wide backlash because Africa’s gay community is becoming more vocal.

“It’s a question of visibility,” said David Cato, who became an activist after he was beaten up four times, arrested twice, fired from his teaching job and outed in the press because he is gay.

“When we come out and ask for our rights, they pass laws against us.”

The legislation has drawn global attention from activists across the spectrum of views on gay issues.

The Ugandan legislation in its current form would mandate a death sentence for active homosexuals living with HIV or in cases of same-sex rape. “Serial offenders” also could face capital punishment. Anyone convicted of a homosexual act faces life imprisonment.

Uganda is not the only country considering anti-gay laws.

Nigeria, where homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment or death, is considering strengthening penalties for activities deemed to promote it. Burundi just banned same-sex relationships and Rwanda is considering it.

Homophobia is rife even in more tolerant African countries.

In Kenya, homosexuality is illegal but the government has acknowledged its existence by launching sexual orientation survey to improve health care.

In South Africa, the only African nation to recognise gay marriage, gangs carry out so-called “corrective” rapes on lesbians.

A 19-year-old lesbian athlete was gang-raped, tortured and murdered in 2008.

some of our favorite(charlottesville)things: mas tapas

we’ve been touring with the boys….and eating well…here are some of the places we went in the early fall…and loved.

post concert, we were wondering what charlottesville munchies were available. tiffany suggested this topless bar. i reminded her that i was a pastor…but i was open minded.  tiffany tried again: tapas. not topless.

we called it the topless place the whole night.

this was one of our favorite post u2 experiences because we were able to walk down the street and get picked up. no crazy lines of traffic. no soul wearying trek home. instead, we were off to mas for spanish tapas still with the buzz of the concert in our soul.  i remember a day trip to chicago i did once…flew in one night, concert the next day…eat at a tortas place…then out the next morning…sleeping at the airport.

this was not as nuts but here we are at our victory party….ravenous.

yes…we are eating with members of tim be told.  i coached some of them the night before how to get a good spot on the railing…and they executed to a t.

enough of their free plug. onto the food.

its all about appetizers, small dishes to snack and pass around….we had sausages, figs in bacon, potato cake, shrimp, a pork chili, sliced meats and cheeses….also some ham sandwiches not pictured. all pretty tasty but we were also pretty delirious after another night in the pit. i would order everything we got minus perhaps the potato cake.

part of the fun and charm of the meal is the sharing and community which continued the vibe of the trip.

i am not sophisticated enough to know if these were good tapas or just ok tapas. they are the best in this town….but i likely need to do some more research. any recommendations?

finally, on a whim, i decided to have a guiness. a toast to my irish friends. i almost never drink beer….i don’t get it. i’m more of a wine guy or learning to be. but for some reason, i get guiness..i’ve read its the coffee and chocolate thing…and asian guys dig guiness?

anyway, see you in phoenix.

at the movies(holidays): christmas carol in 3d imax

i live a few contradictions or at least a few things that don’t quite fit.  i celebrate the holidays as holy: days as in God is vital and these are not just days off.  but also i embrace the substitutes that my non-believing friends may indulge in while i am in my house of worship.

the new house of worship….the new synagogue is the movie theatre. this has replaced the old place where people gather on the weekends and holidays…where they are taught reality and ethics, much like how sunday school worked for me back in the day. consider how chick flicks inform us about how relationship and marriage ought to be.

i frequent both houses of worship….secular and spiritual. it is the intersection of the two that i am drawn to.

this is my long winded musing as to say that holidays means movie going!

i was not planning on seeing this but theresa and her dad wanted to see ninja assasin and i am not down with gore fests. later, they said that they did not like their selection either. we also had theresa’s younger cousin with us so i took her to see a more kid friendly option.

this was great! it is imaginative, literary, moving and life affirming….just like good old fashioned movies used to be. i had a magical, holiday, christmas-y time and what’s amazing is that i know this story. who doesn’t? scrooge, 3 spirits of christmas, tiny tim…….i know what’s coming and it still did it for me. can i confess that i had tears forming?

the visuals are lush and i got to see it in 3d and imax(well…fake imax…smaller screen but still pretty powerful). computer drawn human beings have never looked realer…the genre has evolved past the scary mannequin look. the 3d is not gimmicky but rather adds texture drawing us into a real world.

i would watch this over and over again(in 3d and imax). i would consider this as a great christmas tradition right up there with other classic movie renderings of the same story.  i think theresa would love it too. and she hates fake christmas.

snow day 2009

i am in the dc area to do a wedding. the biggest snow storm of the year has other ideas.

i couldn’t even get out of my in-law’s sub division and don’t know when i will be able to return to nyc.

so trapped in the house with no place to go….gives me time to work on my blog a bit. i’ve neglected it since early december. the last few weeks,  i’ve been pouring my soul into advent, christmas and wedding sermons and couldn’t keep up. but the point of my blog was to practice writing every day…and i was already doing that.

we’ll see how it goes…….

jb’s random thought: cool pastors

an homage to my silly, funny friend johna beth’s old random thoughts blog and a place to write some things i’m thinking about…..randomly. jb applies because of my parents named me the biblical joseph benjamin.

random thought today….i wince whenever someone calls me a cool pastor. i don’t want to be too cool a pastor because really cool pastor types seem to have affairs.

i want to be less cool so that jesus doesn’t get sullied.

at the movies(holidays): where the wild things are

i live a few contradictions or at least a few things that don’t quite fit.  i celebrate the holidays as holy: days as in God is vital and these are not just days off.  but also i embrace the substitutes that my non-believing friends may indulge in while i am in my house of worship.

the new house of worship….the new synagogue is the movie theatre. this has replaced the old place where people gather on the weekends and holidays…where they are taught reality and ethics, much like how sunday school worked for me back in the day. consider how chick flicks inform us about how relationship and marriage ought to be.

i frequent both houses of worship….secular and spiritual. it is the intersection of the two that i am drawn to.

this is my long winded musing as to say that holidays means movie going!

pre-turkey weekend, we went on a date night to where the wild things are. the book has pages numbering barely in the teens so the question is how spike would expand that into 90 minutes.

max is a hurting young kid who channels his aggressions as well as his unexpressed emotions into his imagination. his dreaming leads him to an island of wild creatures where he quickly becomes the king….after all, its his island. the kid who portrays max is great…exuberant, vulnerable, broken and joyous..looking for love in all the wrong places or in the wrong ways.

the visuals are mindblowing:  the costumes and sets bring the fantasy world into reality. no cheese here.  the monsters are cute, fearsome and move like they are real and not like people in costumes.

we usually get spike jonze and loved being john malkovich and adaptation; and we gravitate toward children’s movies but were disappointed by this reimagining. to be fair, the story plays like it is told and thought out by a kid: random happenings, where the story comes and goes and ultimately disjointed.  its also too scary for kids. young kids may cry.

its what we get for looking for a little more hope or manufactured ultimate meaning from spike.  he avoided the pitfalls of providing that  much like he warned others not to do in adaptation.

i would watch it again to catch the different lines and may buy a deluxe version of the movie if it gave us more something. theresa just shrugged when i asked her about the movie.
