ten songs i live by: in my life by the beatles

my friend jon moy tagged me on this…but i was unsure of the rules except what was in the title. he wanted to do a version of the random 25 that was not as pretentious. in my continuing efforts to descend the ivory tower that seems to be my lot in life, i did this too. i promised to periodically post videos of the songs i picked as a public service to people who want to hear the soundtrack in my head. today’s track as done by the beatles who are about to introduce and reintroduce their catalog to the world and a new generation via rock band in the fall.

this is my favorite beatles tune.

these are songs that i chose for a mix of reasons….some define me…some played crucial roles at turning points in my life…some continue to shape me….some i can listen to over and over…some i would jump to hear live…and many if not most, encompass all these reasons.

here’s the complete list:

U2 bad
U2 all I want is you
U2 stay
Radiohead let down
Rolling stones under my thumb
Beatles in my life
Arcade fire wake up
Killers all these things that I’ve done
Stone temple pilots plush
Frank Sinatra new york, new york

ten songs i live by: the list

so over at facebook, people are doing these 25 lists…..

my friend jon moy tagged me on this, a different kind…but i was unsure of the rules except what was in the title. he wanted to do a version of the random 25 that was not as pretentious. in my continuing efforts to descend the ivory tower that seems to be my lot in life, i will do this too.

here at agapeshack.com, i will also periodically post videos of the songs as a public service to people who want to hear the soundtrack in my head. but first, the list:

U2 bad
U2 all I want is you
U2 stay
Radiohead let down
Rolling stones under my thumb
Beatles in my life
Arcade fire wake up
Killers all these things that I’ve done
Stone temple pilots plush
Frank Sinatra new york, new york

these are songs that i chose for a mix of reasons….some define me…some played crucial roles at turning points in my life…some continue to shape me….some i can listen to over and over…some i would jump to hear live…and many if not most, encompass all these reasons.

because it is so hard to narrow down to 10…i have included 2 more songs that are more recent and perhaps would have made the list if they had been born first/before. tough luck, come laters.

Coldplay life in Technicolor ii
Radiohead jigsaw falling into place

hosive’s 25 list

so over at facebook, people are doing these 25 lists. i decided to ride down from my ivory tower and get off my high horse and do this list…mostly because a bunch of nice folks requested it. forgive me if you’ve seen this on facebook already. also forgive me if you know a lot of this stuff already…i am painfully aware of this and make mention of it in #4.

Rules: Once you’ve been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged. You have to tag the person who tagged you.

1)i still don’t know what facebook is for or about. I joined only because jean chang made me. She’ll say she merely requested that I join.

2)i have a scar on my nose from a fall from the bed onto the bed frame that split my nose in half at age 3. Is this why my nose looks different than my family’s?

3)i had a fractured pelvis from a car hitting me in high school. I had…because I went to the hospital and the drs and xrays said so. But later scans show no fracture or a calcium deposit. I’ve got your miracle right here.

4)i was reluctant to do this list thing because I already talk so much about myself(and jesus)to a captive audience every week and I have a blog at agapeshack.com

5)i wonder what kind of sexual genes I’ve inherited. my mom’s dad had two wives. At the same time. Two homes. Two families. But not twice the fun or joy.. my dad’s dad married super young….under 17?

6)Theresa gave me a winter hat that I’ve worn since 2000 and I’ve had some close calls losing it. The last time I was sure I lost it at a starbucks when I prayed this prayer: jesus….i know you’ve got much more important things to take care of…but I know my hat is out there….can you somehow materialize it somewhere so someone I know can find it. 15 minutes later, tom mui said he found it in the backseat of his car.

7)I’ve owned homes in md, nyc and strangely philly. The home in philly I rented out to seminarians and pastors to help them out financially.

8)I’ve been to 30? u2 concerts….20 of them the last time around. 30? Depending on how you count rome when I did not go in because some of our friends ran out of money and we just listened from the outside.

9)I’ve been to the middle east including Egypt, gaza as well as all over Israel.

10)my favorite season is fall followed by winter, spring and summer.

11)the first album I purchased with my own money was prince and the revolution’s purple reign. On vinyl.

12)my first kiss was in a church. A church stairwell.

13)Theresa and I have written messages to our future(hypothetical)childr

en in the tower at wheaton. It is a tradition to ring the tower bell in the Blanchard building when you get engaged or married and you can write on the walls.

14)I’ve danced with conan Obrien before.

15)i used to perform violin/piano duets with my sister when we were really little…I discovered I had no fear being on stage.

16)the majority of my massive comic collection is still in Maryland stored under one of my groomsman’s stairwell. I dunno if we will ever be reunited.

17)on the last tour, bono came to shake my hand because he bought my friend weiling on stage to dance thinking she was my wife/girl. This was not the first time he has sung to her.

18)the first time I met theresa’s dad, I made him laugh out loud. A few times. I think that’s why he likes me.

19)in a strange scheduling of events, I got my master’s degree before my bachelor’s.

20)people sometimes overreact to my soft skin especially when they shake my hands. I’ve always had super soft regenerative skin. Don’t hate, mock or question my masculinity…this maybe the secret to my non-aging. Also, I discovered the fountain of youth in 1937.

21)i was born in the Brooklyn, raised in queens, went to school in the Bronx and now live in manhattan. Staten island is a mystery to me.

22)i learned to drive at the age of 22(that’s a common story for people who grew up in the city)and I’m still not very good at it. An example: i drove a van through a fence when I did not realize the vehicle was in drive and not reverse. it was during a missions trip with a van full of kids. It was one of the worst feelings I’ve had. Maybe the worst.

23)over two years ago, ernie, Theresa and I waited from 10something pm to 3 in the morn on the night of world launch of the wii at toysrus times square. People mocked us when they heard what we were doing because at the time it was widely believed that the ps3 would finally kill Nintendo. We were content in our little world of Nintendo. Today the wii is obviously crushing the other systems making Theresa feel very smug.

24)i know the moment I knew I was going to marry Theresa. We were working out….i was on an elliptical and she was on a bike and cheesy tv was on. She had this silly almost embarrassing grin on her face that you only have when you are totally carefree(“don’t look before you laugh…look ugly in a photograph”)…and I thought…I want to make this girl happy the rest of her life and take care of her.

25)My wedding weekend was a three day affair with over 1000 people, 4 receptions (out of towners, family, cbc friends and non-cbc friends). I even preached at church the day after because I figured so many friends were in town that it would be fun to preach….and it was fun. Epic weekend.
