duh!journal scours the earth for dumb behavior….some low brow…some high minded…all duh!
and sometimes we get a story that is duh! and scary…..
tina fey has been writing some great stuff, as well as using palin lines verbatim, for laughs. here’s a scene unlikely to make snl.:
from the nytimes:
“This is not a man who sees America as you see it and how I see America,” Ms. Palin has taken to saying.
That line follows passages in Ms. Palin’s new stump speech in which she twists Mr. Obama’s ill-advised but fleeting and long-past association with William Ayers, founder of the Weather Underground and confessed bomber. By the time she’s done, she implies that Mr. Obama is right now a close friend of Mr. Ayers — and sympathetic to the violent overthrow of the government. The Democrat, she says, “sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country.”
Her demagoguery has elicited some frightening, intolerable responses. A recent Washington Post report said at a rally in Florida this week a man yelled “kill him!” as Ms. Palin delivered that line and others shouted epithets at an African-American member of a TV crew.
there have been some pretty bad politcal ads playing loose with the facts….here are some of my favorite fake ads that rival the real ads in truth telling and laughability:
here’s one about barack really forgetting how many years he’s been married:
my good friend debby fung and i have shared a lifetime of memories together. actually, more than a few lifetimes or at least different lives. i knew her in high school when we went to the same youth group in nyc. we went to the same college together in chicago when she arrived as freshman and i was a senior/grad student. we wound up working together at a church in the western suburbs. after i had worked as a youth pastor in the dc area for a few years, debby enrolled at george washington for a master’s in art therapy. we eventually again worked at the same church. now, she is back in ny at our home church as the youth pastor there reuniting us a third time.
some people think debby is following me around the country! but she has not lived in every place i have lived! but where debby has failed….barack succeeds!
what a weird feeling to discover that barrack and i have lived in the same places at the same times…..but what is weirder is that he does seem to be following me.
i grew up in nyc and in 1981, barack came to my city to attend columbia. he stayed here 4 years. when i left the city to attend brandeis in the fall of 1988, barack started at harvard. i transferred to wheaton and lived in the chicagoland area from 1990-1994. he moved back to the same area to work at a law firm and teach at the university of chicago. of course, after i moved away, i spent 11 years in the dc area. guess who became a senator and moved to washington in 2004.
this does not mean barack will lose the election and move to new york next. i intend to be here a long time and conceiveably barack can move here in 8 year plus. or in 4. but it makes sense that he will wind up here. the clintons moved here after the first dynasty was over.
i will keep an eye out.
bonus: michael jordan and i also lived in the same places at the same time when he was a bull and a wizard!
our boy at the clinton global initiative in new york city this week:
Bono commenting on the current financial crisis facing the United States: “I am not qualified to comment on what has happened in the last week where this city has changed shape, certainly psychologically, and in terms of some people’s wallets. And I’m not qualified to comment on the interventions that have been put forth. I presume these people know what they’re doing. But it is extraordinary to me that you can find $700 billion to save Wall Street and the entire G8 can’t find $25 billion to save 25,000 children who die every day of preventable, treatable disease and hunger.”
the new york landmark that is saturday night live…has its critics, detractor, imitators, competition and people who continue to wait for its final burial. but its still around and no other late night show has impacted society and pop culture than snl. especially during the political season. below are an array from the current skirmishes with obama, hilary, mcain…and now, palin.
tickets are distributed via lottery each august. one in theory submits an email and receives tickets if chosen. in theory because i have yet to win. the process is very don’t call us, we’ll call you….but how do i know you received my request??? tickets also come by lining up the day off which in ny translates to the night before. i might have to wind up doing this to get in.
these were the debate sketches that brought to national light that the media coddles obama and harshly treats clinton:
here’s the second one.
here’s an nba promotion spoof depicting the obama/clinton rivalry. i wonder how much this confirmed suspicions of hilary’s entitlement.
i have always loved john mccain on snl. he is self deprecating, sarcastic and so real. he’s got great comedic instincts.
here tina fey passionately pleads hilary’s case. she did wind up winning the primaries that followed!
but here is tracey morgan’s response…..and we know the results for his choice.
and here’s what many think will actually take place next year:
finally, a bonus video with mike huckabee…..i always thought he was a comedian! i’ve been laughing at him since day 1. but here, he’s harmless!
this was not broadcast on tv and only happened to see it in the background as i was listening to wolf, anderson, john king and james carville tearing into the opening night’s activities. it was a humble prayer by blue like jazz author, don miller, for the convention and for us. and for me.
Father God,
This week, as the world looks on, help the leaders in this room create a civil dialogue about our future.
We need you, God, as individuals and also as a nation.
We need you to protect us from our enemies, but also from ourselves, because we are easily tempted toward apathy.
Give us a passion to advance opportunities for the least of these, for widows and orphans, for single moms and children whose fathers have left.
Give us the eyes to see them, and the ears to hear them, and hands willing to serve them.
Help us serve people, not just causes. And stand up to specific injustices rather than vague notions.
Give those in this room who have power, along with those who will meet next week, the courage to work together to finally provide health care to those who don’t have any, and a living wage so families can thrive rather than struggle.
Hep us figure out how to pay teachers what they deserve and give children an equal opportunity to get a college education.
Help us figure out the balance between economic opportunity and corporate gluttony.
We have tried to solve these problems ourselves but they are still there. We need your help.
Father, will you restore our moral standing in the world.
A lot of people don’t like us but that’s because they don’t know the heart of the average American.
Will you give us favor and forgiveness, along with our allies around the world.
Help us be an example of humility and strength once again.
Lastly, father, unify us.
Even in our diversity help us see how much we have in common.
And unify us not just in our ideas and in our sentiments—but in our actions, as we look around and figure out something we can do to help create an America even greater than the one we have come to cherish.
God we know that you are good.
Thank you for blessing us in so many ways as Americans.
I make these requests in the name of your son, Jesus, who gave his own life against the forces of injustice.
Let Him be our example.
Amen.

the sound cuts out on the video above so i’ll include this version but you have to jack up the volume to spinal tap 11 to hear some of it.
john edwards just admitted having an affair with rielle hunter. and this is the picture cnn used to depict them. side by side.
who looks like the triumphant good guy? and who looks like the wicked witch of family destruction? that must be one of the best pictures ever of john edwards. and i hope that this is one of the worst pictures of rielle hunter.
a few years ago, i watched a movie with q that scared the bejeezus out of both of us. that movie was election with matthew broderick and reece witherspoon. without ruining the (entire)plot, in the movie one poor decision negates…wipes out…cancels out a lifetime of right choices and good decisions. one of the highly respected characters in the movie does something out of character and loses his(whole)life as he knows it. he becomes a pariah. and it happens in a second.
immediately, q and i declared that we would never allow sexual sin to infiltrate our lives to destroy our ministries, work and futures.
but pride does funny things to you. power does funny things to you. money does funny things to you. you let things creep in. you think you are invulnerable. you think you are an emperor god. and you join emperor clubs.
but sometimes, someone comes along and does something that reminds you of vows you forgot……waking you up…forcing you to rethink a decision…..making you dodge a bullet…..a catharsis and you change your mind.
i am not innocent. i am not pure. this could have been me. my boy harvey says that given the right(wrong)circumstances, anybody can commit any sin anywhere. maybe.
i imagine what my life would be like if my sins were in print and broadcast on tv…….
